A decade ago, Granger embarked on a journey from Chicago to Australia, a project that would change her life. On her first day, she met Coelho, a composer commissioned to write music for the project. Little did they know, this encounter would spark a lasting partnership.
After the project, they embarked on a 500-kilometer hike, living in a tent for weeks, and navigating the complexities of long-distance love. Granger eventually moved to Australia, marking a significant step in their relationship.
Granger, now the Principal Harpist of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, reflects on her journey: "I was searching for more in life, and then I met Tristan. We were both open to new adventures." Coelho adds, "It was a moment where our paths aligned."
But here's where it gets controversial—should one move countries for love? Coelho shares, "We had to decide between America and Australia. I had a stable job, but Emily wanted an adventure." Granger took a leap of faith, selling her furniture and starting anew.
Coelho recalls, "I'll never forget picking up her harp at customs." Granger jokes, "You love moving harps!" This lighthearted moment reveals the couple's unique bond.
Coelho's inspiration took a new turn after meeting Granger: "Her talent and passion inspired me to explore the harp's potential." He became captivated by her technique and the instrument's intricacies.
Granger, in turn, gained a deeper appreciation for composition: "Being with a composer, I realized the dedication and time it demands. It's a beautiful process."
Learning to collaborate wasn't easy. Coelho admits, "I had to learn to give space." Granger adds, "We trust each other's process and then collaborate when the time is right."
Being in a relationship with another musician has its challenges. Coelho advises, "Patience and communication are key." Granger agrees, emphasizing the importance of understanding each other's creative rhythms.
Their latest collaboration is a testament to their journey. Granger knew Coelho would create something extraordinary. "We started three years ago, and it's finally happening on Valentine's Day."
Coelho reveals, "Our love for nature inspired this piece. Each movement captures a landscape, taking the audience on a musical adventure."
