UK Scrapes £110 Million Frictionless Brexit Trade Project
In a surprising turn of events, the UK government has abandoned a £110 million project aimed at streamlining post-Brexit trade processes, according to recent reports. The project, which was contracted to Deloitte and IBM, was part of a larger initiative to create a seamless trade border system after the UK's departure from the EU.
The Conservative government, under the leadership of the previous administration, had set an ambitious goal in 2020 to establish the 'world's most effective border' by 2025. This was a key component of their vision for a new trade system post-Brexit. The proposed solution was a 'single trade window' (STW), a digital platform where importers and exporters could upload all necessary documentation for goods before transportation.
However, the STW project faced significant challenges and was paused in 2024 due to concerns about escalating costs. The TaxWatch thinktank, through freedom of information requests, revealed that no funds have been allocated to the project since January of the previous year, with the Treasury confirming the program's 'early closure'.

The National Audit Office estimated that the government spent at least £4.7 billion on border controls in 2024 alone. Mike Lewis, director of TaxWatch, expressed frustration, stating that the STW has essentially been canceled after an expenditure of over £110 million, yet no tangible results have been delivered by HMRC or the contracted companies.
Despite the pause, the government maintains that 'policy development' continues, but a clear timeline for the STW's implementation remains elusive. This project's fate raises questions about the effectiveness of the UK's Brexit negotiations and the potential impact on international trade.
The Labour government, under Keir Starmer, has also made commitments to the STW, emphasizing the need to minimize administrative burdens for businesses trading internationally.
