Unveiling the Early February Rush in College Football Recruiting
As the 2026 class nears its conclusion and the 2027 class enters a dead period, one might expect a lull in the college football recruiting world. But February's first week has proven otherwise, with several high-profile commitments already made.
While there's still a long way to go before National Signing Day, some programs are laying the groundwork for impressive classes in the upcoming cycle. Here's a breakdown of the notable commitments made in the first six days of February:
5-star Running Back Kemon Spell - Georgia
- Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 3
- School: McKeesport (McKeesport, PA)
Spell, who is still ten months away from officially signing, has had a tumultuous recruitment journey. Initially committed to Penn State, he reconsidered when the Nittany Lions' fortunes waned and their head coach, James Franklin, was fired. Georgia, Notre Dame, and others remained in the running, with Rivals' Steve Wiltfong predicting a potential return to Penn State. However, a visit to Georgia in late January solidified Kirby Smart's program as his top choice, securing the No. 1 running back in the 2027 class.
4-star Defensive Lineman Dylan Berymon - Nebraska (2026)
- Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 250
- School: Ouachita Parish (Monroe, LA)
Berymon, once a Texas pledge, attracted significant interest from LSU, Nebraska, Kentucky, and others late in his recruitment. The in-state Tigers were initially favored, but Nebraska and Kentucky emerged as his final contenders. Nebraska's strong impression, the opportunity to contribute early, and the program's potential under Matt Rhule's leadership swayed his decision.
4-star Offensive Tackle Drew Fielder - Oregon
- Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 472 (#292 in Rivals300)
- School: Servite (Anaheim, CA)
Fielder, a late bloomer who started playing tackle this season, saw his recruitment take off when he transitioned to the position. Oregon, ASU, Kansas, Cal, Nebraska, Washington, Michigan, UCLA, Boise State, San Diego State, and Arizona were among the schools that showed interest in January. However, a visit to Oregon in late February solidified his commitment, praising the program's coaching staff, player development, and team culture.
4-star Offensive Tackle Benjamin Makelela - Iowa State (2026)
- Rivals Industry Ranking: No. 580 (#244 in Rivals300)
- School: CVCS (San Juan Capistrano, CA)
New Iowa State coach Jimmy Rogers faced a significant roster rebuild after Matt Campbell's departure. The Cyclones focused on the transfer portal and high school recruiting. Makelela, a 6'7
