Terry Yorath: Leeds and Wales Legend Dies Aged 75 (2026)

The football world mourns the loss of Terry Yorath, a legendary figure in both Leeds United and Welsh football, who passed away at the age of 75 after a brief illness.

Yorath, known for his remarkable midfield skills, made a significant impact during his nine-year tenure at Leeds United, where he found the back of the net 11 times across 199 appearances, starting from 1967. His time at the club was marked by success; he played a key role in Leeds securing the First Division title in 1974 and also earned runners-up medals in prestigious tournaments such as the FA Cup, European Cup, and the Cup Winners' Cup.

On the international stage, Yorath was capped 59 times for Wales, with 42 of those as captain. His leadership was pivotal when he managed the Welsh national team, bringing them tantalizingly close to the 1994 World Cup finals, only to be narrowly defeated 2-1 by Romania in the deciding qualifier.

Before concluding his playing career with a single appearance for Swansea City, Yorath played for several other clubs, including Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Bradford City. His journey through football was not just about playing; he also had an influential role off the pitch.

Terry was the father of BBC Sport presenter Gabby Logan and had three other children—Daniel, Louise, and Jordan. Tragically, he faced the heart-wrenching loss of his son Daniel, who died at the young age of 15 due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic heart condition, while playing football at home alongside his father.

On the day of the Valley Parade fire in 1985, which claimed the lives of 56 fans and left 270 injured, Yorath served as a player-coach for Bradford City, a tragic event that marked a dark day in football history.

In a heartfelt statement, Yorath's children expressed their sorrow: "To most he was a revered footballing hero, but to us he was dad; a quiet, kind, and gentle man. Our hearts are broken, but we take comfort in knowing that he will be reunited with our brother, Daniel."

Following his playing career, Yorath transitioned into management, leading teams like Swansea, Wales, Bradford, Cardiff, Lebanon, Sheffield Wednesday, and Margate. Notably, he guided Swansea to promotion from the Fourth Division in 1988, and he nearly led Wales to their first World Cup finals since 1958.

Former Bradford striker Dean Windass shared his condolences on social media platform X, saying, "Sad news, great man and a gentleman. Thoughts go to his family. RIP."

Terry Yorath’s legacy as a footballer and a father will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the hearts of many.
