South Carolina Women's Basketball: A Test of Resilience
Facing adversity can truly reveal the strength within a team, and that's precisely what the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team is experiencing. They're learning to navigate the season with a significantly reduced roster, a challenge that's testing their depth and adaptability.
On a recent Sunday game, the Gamecocks were down to a mere seven available players. While they managed to secure a win against NC Central, the situation meant extended playing time for the remaining players.
This challenging situation began in July when Ashlyn Watkins made the decision to sit out the season. This reduced the team to 11 players. Then, just a month before the season began, Chloe Kitts suffered a season-ending ACL injury, leaving the Gamecocks with only 10 players. This is a remarkably small roster for a program accustomed to having 9 or 10 players in rotation. Losing any more players became a significant concern.
Throughout the season, the team has faced a series of setbacks. In 10 games, they've had all 10 players available at the start of only four games and finished with all 10 players in just three games. Ayla McDowell missed a game due to illness, Maddy McDaniel was sidelined due to a knee injury and suspension, and Agot Makeer was also out due to injury. The situation reached its peak against NC Central, with Makeer still out, Tessa Johnson sick, and Madina Okot leaving the game due to illness. This left the Gamecocks with only seven players available.
"It sucks, dealing with that," Ta’Niya Latson admitted, "It hits us as a team, but we’ve got to keep going." Coach Dawn Staley's mentality is, "next man up."
Coach Staley's focus is on the players who are available. During a timeout, Raven Johnson mentioned missing Tessa Johnson to pass to. Staley's response was, "Well, we’ve got Ayla. Pass the ball to Ayla." Staley strives to instill this focus in her players. She only concentrates on the players who are healthy and ready to play.
This situation isn't entirely unique in the world of college basketball. Auburn held walk-on tryouts to fill out their roster, and TCU forfeited games and held open tryouts to add players due to injuries.
While this is a challenging situation, Staley is considering options. During the 2022-23 season, Notre Dame had so many injuries that they encouraged freshman Cassandre Prosper to enroll early to bolster their bench.
However, this isn't an option for South Carolina. The team's signees, Kaeli Wynn and Kelsi Andrews, are recovering from injuries, so they are unlikely to contribute. The Gamecocks will have to make do with the 10 players they have.
"It's just a different challenge, and we are at our very best when we’re challenged," Staley stated.
