PhD candidate Sepehr Saryazdi, accused of planning a terror attack on Australia Day, has been denied bail. The 24-year-old, a CSIRO researcher, was charged with one count of acts in preparation for or planning a terrorist act. The court heard that Saryazdi had been brought to the attention of counter-terrorism officers due to online posts. Commonwealth prosecutor Ellie McDonald revealed that the alleged offending involved Facebook Messenger chats within a private group of over 50 people. Saryazdi's plans included leading a riot on the Gold Coast on Australia Day, using Molotov cocktails, and encouraging others to do the same. He allegedly stated, 'I will be leading the Gold Coast riots on Jan 26 if you know people in Melbourne, let them know to stockpile vodka bottles.' He also provided advice on staying calm if arrested and even recommended learning how to shoot guns at shooting ranges. Ms. McDonald emphasized the seriousness of the situation, given recent events. She opposed his bail, arguing that he posed a significant risk of committing a violent act if released. Defence lawyer Hellen Shilton, however, portrayed Saryazdi as an isolated academic influenced by new associates. She claimed his intention was to make national news and bring people together, not to hurt anyone. Magistrate Penelope Hay denied bail, citing Saryazdi's frank admissions of authoritarian beliefs and the risk of serious injury to multiple people. He remains in custody, with his case set to return to court next month.
