A shocking R500,000 fuel fraud case has come to light, with a 34-year-old petrol attendant arrested for allegedly cloning fuel cards and stealing from unsuspecting drivers. This incident highlights the intricate web of collaboration between banks, fuel stations, and law enforcement in combating financial crimes. The story unfolds as a result of a meticulous joint investigation by two banks' card fraud investigators, a Truckstop Inn fuel station, and the Hawks' Middelburg-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit. According to Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi, the suspect allegedly cloned fuel cards during transactions at the fuel station, resulting in an estimated loss of R469,000 for card users. The Hawks' swift action, prompted by the suspected criminal activity, led to the arrest of the petrol attendant on December 12, 2025. A card-cloning device was found in his possession, further solidifying the evidence against him.
