In a Rapid Political Turnover, José María Balcázar Takes Peru's Helm
LIMA, PERU (AP) -- In a dramatic political twist, Peru's Congress elected José María Balcázar as the country's interim leader on Wednesday, marking the eighth presidential change in a decade. This comes just a day after the previous interim president, José Jerí, was removed from office over corruption allegations, barely four months into his term.
Balcázar, a 30-year judicial veteran and retired judge, secured the majority vote from the 130-member legislature, representing the leftist Perú Libre party. This election highlights the ongoing political crisis in Peru, characterized by frequent leadership changes due to a lack of legislative support.
The country's political instability is further exacerbated by the frequent use of a broad constitutional interpretation regarding 'permanent moral incapacity' to remove sitting presidents. This has led to a revolving door of leadership, with Balcázar set to govern for just five months before the upcoming April 12 elections.
Peruvians will choose a new president and legislature, with a runoff in June if no candidate receives over 50% of the vote. Balcázar's immediate challenge will be addressing the surge in murders and extortion, which has particularly affected small business owners and the working class.
Various political groups are demanding transparency and guarantees for a fair election process. Balcázar has pledged to ensure the upcoming elections are 'unquestionable,' maintain macroeconomic and monetary policies, and refocus the fight against organized crime.
The current Congress, which began in 2021, has already impeached three heads of state: Pedro Castillo, Dina Boluarte, and Jerí. The political turmoil comes as a shock, especially considering Jerí's position as next in line for the presidency in October 2025, following Boluarte's lack of vice presidents.
Jerí's removal followed revelations of undisclosed meetings with Chinese business owners, including a state contractor, which led to preliminary investigations by the Public Prosecutor's Office for alleged illegal sponsorship and influence-peddling.
As Balcázar takes the reins, the nation awaits his leadership and the potential for a more stable political future, despite the ongoing challenges.
