The fate of orangutans hangs in the balance as devastating floods wreak havoc on their Indonesian habitats. Local ranger Amran Siagian, 39, has witnessed the tragic impact firsthand. Before the deadly landslides and floods struck Indonesia, Siagian frequently encountered Tapanuli orangutans on a hill in Sipirok, North Sumatra. These orangutans delighted in feasting on durian and other fruits from nearby farms. However, the landscape has changed dramatically since the landslides. The once-thriving orangutan population has vanished, leaving Siagian with a sense of profound loss. The floods and landslides have claimed 962 lives and left 291 missing, with similar devastation felt in southern Thailand and Malaysia. Local leaders and environmental groups blame deforestation linked to mining and logging for exacerbating the floods' impact. In Sipirok, a village in South Tapanuli, large trees have been cut down, leaving the orangutans struggling to survive. The deforestation has been ongoing for at least a year, according to Siagian, and has already affected the orangutans before the floods. The orangutans, highly dependent on the forest canopy for their survival, face immense challenges in a sparse forest environment. The Orangutan Information Center (OIC) estimates that around 760 orangutans call the Tapanuli region home. The primary threat to these orangutans is the loss of forest due to plantations and extractive industries. With approximately 119,000 orangutans residing in Indonesia and Malaysia, the situation is dire. Siagian warns that without government assistance, the orangutans risk extinction, especially with the ongoing deforestation crisis.
