Mamdani's Mayoral Control U-Turn: What's Next for NYC Schools? (2026)

A major shift in NYC's education landscape is underway! Zohran Mamdani, the newly sworn-in mayor of New York City, has made a surprising U-turn on a key campaign promise: mayoral control of the city's schools. This decision, reported by The New York Times, signals a significant change in direction.

During his campaign, Mamdani voiced concerns that mayoral control diminished the voices of teachers, parents, and students in crucial educational decisions. But now, he's advocating to retain his authority over the nation's largest school system.

"Though I held concerns about mayoral control, I also know that New Yorkers need to know where the buck stops: with me," Mamdani stated on Wednesday, as reported by The Times. He further clarified that his approach to mayoral control will prioritize tangible and actionable community involvement, not just ceremonial procedures.

Mamdani plans to request that state lawmakers extend mayoral authority over schools when they consider its renewal, a process that usually occurs every two to four years.

Adding to the news, Mamdani has also announced his choice for schools chancellor: Kamar Samuels. Samuels, previously a schools superintendent in Upper Manhattan, will now oversee a staggering $40 billion operating budget and more than 1,500 schools across the five boroughs. To put this into perspective, the entire state of Maryland has roughly 1,400 public schools.

Samuels is set to begin his new role on Thursday. Outgoing Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos will stay on for a month to facilitate the transition.

But here's where it gets controversial... This reversal could be seen as a pragmatic move to maintain control and accountability. However, it also raises questions about the mayor's commitment to the voices of the community. What do you think about this change of heart?
