We are gathered here today to honor the life and legacy of Ambassador James Duro Olufemi Sokoya, a true diplomat and a pillar of our nation's history. His passing is a moment of reflection and gratitude for a life well-lived and a career dedicated to diplomacy and nation-building.
Ambassador Sokoya, at the ripe age of 94, leaves behind a remarkable journey that began in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State. He was an exceptional statesman, a true patriot, and a shining beacon of diplomatic excellence. With unwavering dedication, dignity, and a deep-rooted belief in the power of dialogue, he served Nigeria with an unmatched commitment.
His public service began before Nigeria's independence in 1960, in the Old Western Region. For years, he dedicated himself to education, teaching in primary and secondary schools and teacher training colleges in Abeokuta, Ibadan, and Ijebu-Ode. During this time, he pursued his studies at the University of Ibadan, graduating with a degree in Geography in 1960. His brilliance and patriotism were evident as he worked for the Western Nigeria government, leaving an indelible mark on various ministries, including the Premier's Office.
In 1962, Ambassador Sokoya joined the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from then on, his diplomatic career flourished. Whether stationed at home or abroad, he carried himself with calm wisdom and a steady hand, always with a heart focused on service. He was more than just a representative; he embodied the finest virtues of our nation.
Ambassador Sokoya's impact was felt across various roles. He served as Head of the Asia Department, Chief of Protocol under Gen. Yakubu Gowon, and at the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York. He also led the Nigerian Embassy in Bamako, Mali, as Charge d'Affaires, and later served in Algiers, Algeria. His contributions were instrumental in Nigeria's entry into OPEC and the establishment of our embassy in Vienna, Austria. Additionally, he served as Deputy High Commissioner in London and as the first Resident Nigerian High Commissioner to Jamaica, with concurrent accreditation to Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ambassador Sokoya was a man of exceptional character. He was humble, principled, and compassionate, inspiring younger diplomats with his mentorship and leaving a positive impact on his community. His life teaches us that leadership is not solely measured by accomplishments but also by the positive influence we have on others and the values we uphold.
On behalf of all Nigerians, I extend my deepest gratitude to Ambassador Sokoya for his years of devoted service. His contributions to our nation will forever be remembered and honored. His legacy will continue to guide future generations of public servants.
