Heysen Trail Day 21: A Journey to Hiskeys Hut
The Heysen Trail, a 90-kilometre walking trail through the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. On Day 21 of my journey, I arrived at Hiskeys Hut, a place with a rich and fascinating history that mirrors the resilience and adaptability of its past inhabitants.
The walk from Crystal Brook to Hiskeys Hut was a peaceful 20.8km (12.5mi) trek, offering a contrast to the noisy train and truck traffic of the previous night. The morning was spent in the camp kitchen, charging devices and working on various projects, providing a much-needed break from the trail's physical demands.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to finish off the last of the locally sourced oranges and a huge seedy roll, a delightful treat for the weary hiker. The trail then took us back through town and out to country roads, where we encountered Goyder's Line of rainfall, a significant marker in the region's climate.
A memorable encounter was meeting a descendant of the area's original settlers, who shared stories of life growing up in the region. The evolution of farming practices, from traditional crops and livestock to modern choices like wheat, lentils, canola, and merino sheep for wool, was fascinating. This glimpse into the past highlighted the changing dynamics of the land and its people.
As we continued, the trail took us through private farmland, where we caught our first glimpse of a massive pipeline, sparking curiosity about its purpose. The speculation about the pipe's function and the possibility of a nearby brewery added a touch of whimsy to the walk.
The afternoon brought a delightful surprise as we met a group of fellow bushwalkers having lunch in the grass. Their hospitality was heartwarming, and they even shared some snacks, fostering a sense of community among hikers. The trail's animal sightings were limited to birds, sheep, and a lone kangaroo, adding to the serene atmosphere.
The final stretch was met with a cold headwind, a welcome challenge after the damp conditions earlier in the day. The breeze dried our tents efficiently, and I set out a wet sock and shoe to dry, grateful for the trail's ever-changing weather.
Hiskeys Hut itself is a testament to the resilience of its past inhabitants. Built by Arthur Hiskey in 1907, it became the residence of the Gaghan family in 1933. The tragic death of John Gaghan during WWI left his pregnant wife and six children in a dire situation. The family's struggle for survival, with no electricity, running water, or fly screens, is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by early settlers.
The hut's history took a turn in the 1990s when it fell into disrepair. The Hiskey family's support for its restoration as a Heysen hiker hut is a testament to the trail's importance in preserving the region's history. The project, involving a team of homeless men from Adelaide, not only restored the building but also provided meaningful work, offering a chance for personal growth and redemption.
Today, Hiskeys Hut stands as a symbol of resilience and community, a place where hikers can rest and reflect on the trail's rich history. As I lay in my sleeping bag, typing this on my phone, I feel a sense of gratitude for the experience and the opportunity to connect with the past, present, and future of this remarkable trail.
In my opinion, the Heysen Trail is not just a physical journey but a journey through time, offering a unique perspective on the region's history and the enduring spirit of its people. It is a trail that leaves a lasting impression, inviting hikers to explore, reflect, and appreciate the beauty of nature and the stories it holds.
