Fernando Mendoza's Emotional Heisman Speech: Rewriting History and Inspiring Dreams (2026)

A tearful Fernando Mendoza delivers a fiery, uplifting acceptance speech after clinching the Heisman Trophy

For the first time in Indiana Hoosier history, a player from the program captured college football’s prestigious Heisman Trophy. Fernando Mendoza emerged as the winner, and he spoke with striking emotion in the moments that followed.

Mendoza spoke for about four minutes after receiving the award, defeating Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia. Mendoza tallied 643 first-place votes and 2,362 total points, while Pavia earned 189 first-place votes and 1,435 points.

In his address, Mendoza thanked his teammates and his family, but his words were most powerful when he spoke to his mother. Emotions overtook him as he said:

“Mom, this trophy is as much yours as mine. You have always been my biggest supporter. You are my light, my reason, my strongest advocate. Your sacrifices, courage, and love have shaped me, and they’ve become the first playbook I’ll carry with me for life.

“You taught me that toughness isn’t about loudness. It can be quiet and enduring. It means choosing hope and believing in yourself even when the world gives you little reason to. Together, we’re redefining what people think is possible. I love you.”

Fernando Mendoza: ‘Trust in Your Own Talents’

Mendoza’s standout season helped Indiana achieve a flawless 13-0 record, remain the last undefeated team, and secure the top seed in the College Football Playoff. After transferring from Cal, he led the nation with 33 touchdown passes and compiled a 71.5% completion rate for 2,980 yards, with just six interceptions.

Before steering Indiana to its first outright Big Ten title since 1945 and earning the CFP’s No. 1 seed, Mendoza was a relatively under-the-radar recruit at Cal. As he concluded his speech, he offered a message to young players who feel overlooked:

“I want every kid out there who feels overlooked or underestimated to know I was in your position. I was that kid, too. You don’t need the most stars, hype, or rankings. What you need is discipline, heart, and people who believe in you. You must believe in your own abilities. I hope this moment proves that pursuing your dreams is worth it, no matter how big or daunting they seem.”

Fernando Mendoza now joins a storied lineage of Heisman winners, and at long last, one is returning to Bloomington. Indiana is shifting its focus toward the College Football Playoff, beginning with the Rose Bowl.
