This thrilling win marks the Blazers’ fourth consecutive triumph, further solidifying their momentum in the league.
As the game reached its climax, it appeared that Tari Eason had clinched a dramatic late-game tip-in for the Rockets as the buzzer sounded, igniting wild celebrations among Houston's players. However, following a review, it was determined that the shot did not count, as it had not released in time.
The two teams will face off again soon, with the next match scheduled at the Moda Center on Friday night.
Throughout much of the second half, the Blazers managed to maintain a slim lead against the Rockets. The turning point came when Amen Thompson tied the game at 84 with a free throw, just under nine minutes remaining. In response, Shaedon Sharpe quickly regained the advantage for Portland with a crucial three-pointer.
As the game progressed, Houston closed the gap to 101-99 thanks to Kevin Durant’s jumper and subsequent free throw with just over a minute left on the clock. Avdija, however, responded decisively with a layup to extend the lead.
With the Blazers ahead 103-100 in the final moments, Durant sank two free throws, narrowing the score once again with only 5.9 seconds remaining. During Portland's inbound play, a loose ball foul was called on Houston, a decision that coach Ime Udoka successfully contested, giving possession back to the Rockets.
Durant, who ended the night with 37 points, had a chance to tie the game but missed a 19-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds left. Eason’s attempt at the buzzer then fell short, sealing the Blazers' victory.
It's worth noting that the Rockets were without Alperen Sengun, who is nursing a sprained ankle sustained during a previous game against Dallas and is expected to miss up to two weeks of play.
Yang Hansen, Portland's promising 7-foot rookie, made his mark by hitting a long-range three-pointer toward the end of the first quarter, helping the Blazers take a 25-21 lead. Meanwhile, Eason, who played a limited role in the opening quarter due to knee issues, returned to score a three-pointer that briefly gave Houston a 27-25 lead.
Portland concluded the first half strong, finishing on a 17-7 run to take a 57-47 advantage into halftime. Avdija capped off an impressive third quarter with an acrobatic 19-foot layup at the buzzer, ensuring the Blazers headed into the final period with an 81-75 lead.
